If you have other skills not listed but are interested, we would still like to hear from you. 

 What commitment do I have to make?

 We have a flexible approach to commitment.  We want you to donate the time that suits you whilst making the best use of the skills and experience you have.  The amount of time our volunteers offer can range from a regular commitment of a set number of hours a week, to being on 'stand-by' for a few hours a month.

 Other options

Volunteers are not only needed for the new Hospice in North Court Road, Chelmsford. We also have Day Hospices in Braintree and Maldon and hospice shops in South Woodham Ferrers and Witham.

Volunteering Roles

Caring For Patients

Day Hospice - Braintree, Chelmsford and Maldon

 Host/ess - 9.45am - 3.15pm (Mon - Fri)

Volunteers assist the nursing team by providing refreshments for patients, vsitors, providing a listening ear, setting and clearing tables and assisting patients with creative activities, when required.

Nursing Assistant - 9.30am - 3.30pm (Mon - Fri)

Volunteers help our nurses with patient care in a number of practical tasks, including personal hygiene and toilet needs and assisting patients with creative therapy activities when required.

 In-Patient Unit - Chelmsford

Host/ess - 9.00am - noon weekdays and weekends, 6.00pm - 9.00pm evenings

This is a behind the scenes role providing refreshments to patients and visitors alike on our Inpatient Unit and keeping patients' rooms tidy.  There is the opportunity to chat to patients and generally help improve their quality of life.

Nursing Assistant - 7.30am - 1.30pm, 6.00pm - 8.30pm both weekdays and weekends

Volunteers help our nurses on the Inpatient Unit with patient care by participating in simple duties, including personal hygiene and toilet needs, washing, dressing and assisting patients with food and drink.

Farleigh Hospice Shops

Shop Assistant - 9.00am - 1.00pm, 1.00pm - 4.30pm (Mon-Sat)

Farleigh Hospice retail volunteers help within our shops by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for Farleigh Hospice customers.  Never underestimate the value of a cheery greeting!

Typically, volunteers help both at the front and back of the shop, including:

Receiving donations
Pricing items
Tidying and displaying goods
Steaming
Operating the till
If you like indulging your creative side you could get involved in window dressing.  You may also take on additional responsibility by helping with the reorganisation of stock, sorting bric-a-brac and ordering goods.

Catering

Catering Assistant - 8.30am - 12.30pm and 10.00am - 2.00pm (Mon-Sat) and 9.30am - 1.30pm (Sat & Sun).

All our patients are offered a hot meal with a dessert to make their day complete.  Volunteers help our catering team to provide meals for all our patients, visitors, volunteers and staff.

Sorting Donated Goods

Sorting Clothing Donations - Flexible, (Mon - Sat)

Member of the general public are very generous in donating clothes, bric-a-brac and furniture and help is needed to sort goods to kit out our 8 shops.  You can get a real sense of satisfaction from finding yourself a bargain as well as supporting a good cause.  You will work amongst a fun loving team and have a greater insight into how our retail operation works.

Bereavement Support

Bereavement Support Team Volunteer - Flexible, whenever convenient

To provide follow-up support, usually by telephone, to the bereaved families of patients who have been under the care of Farleigh Hospice.  A counselling background is not essential as training is provided.

Reception

Receptionist - 8.30am - 12.30pm, 12.30pm - 4.30pm - 8.00pm (weekdays and weekends)

This is a pivotal role to extend a greeting to all Farleigh Hospice visitors and help staff our switchboard.  There is also the opportunity to get involved with clerical duties from time to time.  Although shifts are weekly/fortnightly, we always need cover at short notice.

Fundraising

Fundraising - Flexible, whenever convenient

There are always opportunities to help locally by collecting at events such as our Sunflower Week, staffing stalls, acting as marshalls at sponsored walks, and selling raffle tickets.  Alternatively, you could get involved in one our fundraising groups or as a member of our craft circle.  If you can help, please call our Fundraising Team on 01245 358130.

Driving

Day Hospice Driver - Tuesday - Friday

Volunteer drivers are instrumental in helping new patients settle into a different environment by providing a friendly face.  If you have your own vehicle we are looking for volunteers who could collect patients and bring them into the Day Hospice/s for 10.00am and collect them again at the end of the day at 3.00pm.  Patients also come in for treatment so timing can be varied.  Mileage is payable.  Drivers are welcomed on either a regular or as needed basis.

To assist our Distribution Centre by driving, loading and unloading our vans with donated goods and collecting and delivering them to our shops.  Drivers' mates assist, as necessary.

Flower Arranging

Flower Arranger - Flexible, whenever convenient

Farleigh Hospice encourages a warm and welcoming atmosphere and our flower arranging team is instrumental in helping to create this environment.  Flower arrangers help redesign floral bouquets delivered to Farleigh Hospice.  In addition to regular dates, holiday and sickness cover is also required.
