Our volunteers make Farleigh Hospice possible. By working alongside staff members in all areas of the hospice, they effectively save us £350,000 expenditure annually.
Volunteering has shed its image of being middle class, middle age and mostly a female occupation. Our volunteers at Farleigh Hospice span all age groups and come from every background. For some, volunteering may be part of a scheme like The Duke of Edinburgh Award. For others it's the chance to broaden their awareness of social issues between school and further education or training. Many volunteers find it possible to squeeze a few hours a week from the demands of home and family. Shift workers offer help at times which could be difficult for others. Never forget that volunteering can also offer the opportunity to start another career in retirement!
The volunteer roles within Farleigh are as diverse as the volunteers themselves. Volunteers help on the In-Patient floor, in the kitchen, prepare suppers for the patients, fundraise, do mounds of ironing, arrange flowers - to name just a few.
The amount of time our volunteers offer can range from a regular commitment of a set number of hours a week, to being on "stand-by" for a few hours a month. Many bring skills they have acquired previously to their volunteer role, for others it is the opportunity to learn new skills. All bring a desire to help Farleigh Hospice run as smoothly, efficiently and effectively as possible for the patients in our care.
If you would like to volunteer your services, please get in touch with Maureen Gow, Volunteer Co-ordinator, who would love to hear from you.
