FAQ's

Why is in Braintree Day Hospice Closing?

Our day hospice in Braintree is based in the St Michael's hospital building and we have been given notice that our lease will expire due to planned re-development work.  We have therefore had to look at alternative ways of supporting the people of the Braintree Distirct.

Why aren't you opening another day hospice in Braintree?

After undertaking a lot of research with patients, families and other health care professionals it was clear that patients wanted to be cared for as close to home as possible and that there were far more people in the local community who could benefit from hospice care than currently had access.  Currently 1 in 3 people will get cancer at some point in their lives and this figure is expected to increase in the future so the demands on our services are always growing.  We had to look at ways of keeping pace with demand and to care for patients where they wanted to be cared for.  The HOP Vehicle has the advantage of meeting both of these needs - it will enable more patients than ever before to access hospice services and these servies will be provided in their local community.

Patients who could still benefit from day care can benefit from these services at the nearby Maldon or Chelmsford centres and extra capacity at these centres for Braintree patients.  The need for a day care centre in Braintree will be assessed as an ongoing part the new project.
